MSK Injections

Ultrasound Guided Steroid Injections

We offer ultrasound guided steroid injections for musculoskeletal (MSK) joints, tendons and nerves. The procedure is performed by a fully qualified Specialist MSK Sonographer who has been practising diagnostic and interventional MSK ultrasound for over fifteen years, including MSK steroid injections.

Steroid Injections

The Specialist MSK Sonographer will use ultrasound to guide the injection to the appropriate place. Usually, local anaesthetic is injected to temporarily numb the area, and steroid to reduce pain and inflammation. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

Do I need a referral?

No, you don’t. While some patients are referred to us by their specialists, you can self-refer for ultrasound guided steroid injections. Please complete a referral form using the link below. Your clinical details will be checked by our Specialist MSK Sonographer to ensure that the procedure is appropriate for you. We will get in touch with you to arrange your appointment.

Self-funding Pricing and Further Information

The fee for an ultrasound guided steroid injection is £249. The fee includes the ultrasound scan, the injection, and the Specialist MSK Sonographer’s report.

At your appointment
You and the Specialist MSK Sonographer will review the Consent Form together, and you can ask any questions you may have about the procedure. Diagnostic ultrasound scanning will be used to check if the procedure is appropriate for you. If the scan shows that an injection would not be appropriate, this will be explained to you in full and you will only be charged for a diagnostic examination. If the scan shows that the procedure is appropriate, your skin around the injection site will be cleaned with antiseptic and the area numbed with an injection of local anaesthetic. Generally, the procedure is not painful although the local anaesthetic may sting for a short while.

Steroid injections can take a few days to have a noticeable effect. The steroid lasts for up to six weeks but the effects of the injection can sometimes last much longer.

The Specialist MSK Sonographer will provide a written report about this procedure for you.

There are small risks associated with steroid injections, which you should be aware of before you proceed. The Specialist MSK Sonographer performing your procedure will discuss these with you at your appointment.
